Country Hopping: Prague, Czechia

I would say I slept fairly alright last night. I didn’t have to get up for any activity so that allowed me to sleep in since the only activity I had today began at 7:30pm and that was a Prague: Folkloric Dinner Show with Unlimited Drinks. Slept in I did too as I didn’t really get myself up until noon and even after that I remained in the bed watching movies and what not. I ended up booking a guided electric trike tour of Prague for tomorrow versus a Big Bus tour/Hop On Hop Off tour (as I don’t want to be disappointed with one of those again, plus this was different and seemed exciting. I reached out to my Airbnb host to ask if I could leave my bags somewhere while I do my tours for tomorrow and thankfully she has a place in the building where I can lock my things up.

I waited and waited and after 6:50 I messaged them reminding them that I was waiting at my meeting point. The tour company told me to wait until 7pm and if the driver hadn’t gotten there yet to message back and they’d handle it. Well around 6:55pm here comes the van scooping me up as I was the last pick-up to the 4 people (2 couples-one from Boston and the other from DC) that were already inside and off we went. The driver was nice in answering all the questions we had and telling us things about Czechia. We were all glad we had arranged for transportation because it was as though the dinner was taking place on the other side of town.

Once we got there we were greeted with a greeting shot of mead (honeywine) and escorted to our table. I would say it looked like what I imagined on the inside with multiple tables and the stage in the center. They started us off with some bread with a cheese/garlic spread and some Czech potato soup that was really good. I enjoyed the mead, had a glass of white wine (that was good) and a small glass of beer (I liked it because it was lite). A few things about me and beer, I don’t really like it, when I drink it I burp a lot, it makes me yawn and sleepy.

The band played and sang as we enjoyed our starters and I left my beer as I was waiting to drink it with my food as maybe it wouldn’t make me too sleepy on a full stomach. Dancers came out in their traditional attire and did a few performances and they took a few volunteers from the audience. When they said unlimited drinks they meant it too as the table next to us full of mostly guys kept getting their beer refills. All of our food orders had been pre-arranged and I was getting the salmon. The waitress brought out our food and we dug in. For dessert was an apple strudel which I tried but wasn’t a fan of so it stayed on the plate along with a small strong cup of coffee which I took a small sip of because mead, wine and beer then mixed with coffee will have you running to the toilet.

Every table also had a flag of the country in which people were from which was nice to see to look around to see who else was there (I know Canada, Turkey, and Switzerland were there amongst others). There was also a group of people from Texas there as well. The food was tasty and I managed to clean my plate. After dinner and drinks it seemed as though people were more willing to participate in singing along and going up to join them on stage for dancing. They sang “Bella Ciao” and “I Will Survive” and that really seemed to get the crowd going.

While sharing the experience with them I learned that the couples I were with both came by the Odyssey Cruise (one couple was just wrapping there’s up while the other was just beginning). They were older but nice and was surprised to see that I was a solo traveler. I enjoyed chatting with them and telling them all the places I’d been so far on this trip and how even my ankles and my heavyweight bags weren’t going to stop me from still getting the experience in. Earlier one of the waitresses came around with props and got photos of us, and I didn’t realize they wanted to charge us for a print. She brought them around and mine looked nice, so as she was busy I snapped a photo of my photo for free and gave her the photo back (she wanted 10 euros for my photo, do you know how crazy that sounds?).

At one point we thought the show was over because they brought around the tip basket (that yes I made change from) and we started to leave just to be told it wasn’t quite over yet and our driver wasn’t there yet so we went back in. There were a few more rounds of songs and dances and when it seemed as though things were wrapping up and more people were beginning to leave, we then left as well. Outside pictures were taken and we were escorted to our van. On the way there a woman was speaking to one of the ladies in our group and she was saying how she would love to visit America but not now. She said, “I just don’t like your president so I have no desire to go right now” and we both said, “We don’t like him either” (yes I interjected). I feel like it’s important for people to know that even though he won he is very disliked by many and many of us didn’t want that/him. She said she found it very interesting how the Americans she’s spoken to said they don’t like him either (I wonder if anyone would ever admit to being a fan of his when traveling after hearing people’s disdain for him).

We settled in the van (our driver dropping us off was different than the one that picked us up) and off we went. I would be the 1st drop-off since I was the last pick-up and I don’t know if it’s because it was earlier but we seemed to get back fairly quicker. I said my goodbyes and headed into my Airbnb for the night. I really didn’t unpack so there’s not much to pack but I did buy things that I didn’t eat/drink (which is annoying). Some I will take with me while others I’ll leave in case the host or next tenant wants it. I’ll check-out in the morning, lock up my things and head to my activities and will be back to get them before heading to the train station.
