Let me start off by saying I had one of the best sleeps last night despite all the issues I was experiencing (prayer works). I tried to set my alarm a bit earlier than usual since I’m not moving as fast as usual and I discovered I should’ve given myself more time. As I was getting ready I lost track of time and looked up and realized I wasn’t going to make it to the meeting point using public transportation so I got an Uber. Today was my No Diet Club-The street food paradise in Berlin tour and I was going to do everything I could to make it if I felt like I wouldn’t over do it.
The forecast showed rain so I was sure to grab my umbrella. I arrived at our meeting place The Sanctuary and there was a nice size group of people their with a few more to come. I met the tour guide Ines who had asked us the night before if anyone had an allergy and diet restrictions in which I told her I’m allergic to nuts so nothing with nuts in it. Well The Sanctuary was an Italian vegan bakery and she advised me that they told her there may be traces of nuts even in other pastries so to be on the safe side I opted out of eating at this location. It seemed as though what they ate was a croissant with a cream, powder and maybe pistachios on it (which sidebar I actually can eat pistachios).
Next we were onward to the next location and I told Ines that I might walk a little slower than usual but I’ll still be able to keep up with the group I just might be in the back due to my ankles. We had 5 stops to go to so I prepared my mind to be in for a good bit of walking, which in this case everything I do will involve a good bit of walking, it’s just pacing myself. Our next stop Cult Curry Mitte was probably my favorite as I had a true German dish currywurst and loved it. It’s a simple dish made of sausage and curry ketchup and then we had fries with a garlic mayo sauce…delicious. Now here’s the story I heard yesterday about how it was invented, Herta Heuwer a German chef was experimenting with new recipes and she happened to trip up and the ketchup and curry powder became mixed. She tasted it and then put it on the sausage and boom currywurst (I have no idea if this story is actually true but I like it).
By now it was beginning to rain and it was raining hard (thank goodness we were covered for the most part). As it began to lighten up we began walking to the 3rd place but we had to stop and take cover as it really began to pour and thunder and lightning. All I could think was I’m so glad I did the Berlin history walking tour yesterday because doing that today would not be ideal. Thankfully it eased up and we made it to El Amigo Taqueria which had a cute food truck outside and a small inside seating area. We spent the most time here and I got a chance to meet a couple from Tampa and a couple from London and a couple from Switzerland.
We were able to order 2 tacos so I opted for the pastor (pork) and bistec (steak-the steak was the best). We ate, chatted and bought drinks. I asked Ines if these places were her recommendations but she said it was the company that she worked for and that she likes a few of them. Once everyone was done we walked to the next place (which to me felt like the furthest so far) and of course it began storming again. Hannah did say yesterday you can likely experience every season in one day in Berlin and that was proving to be true because it did evrything but snow today.
The fourth stop was Rüyam Gemüse Kebab and we made it in as the rain picked up again. I had the best kebab half sandwich and everything in it complimented it so well (from the sauce to the mint, everything). The half was pretty big so I ate half and wrapped the rest up to eat for later. With it we had some hot Turkish tea which was also good. We stayed here for a but as well and chatted. Ines our guide is from France and admitted she doesn’t speak German at all but that she’s in school studying German.
Ines asked a few of us for the last stop if we wanted pastries or ice cream and ice cream seemed to win the vote so we headed to our last and final stop. Thankfully it was just across and up the street so it wasn’t far as now I was getting tired of walking. At Jones Ice Cream I had a scoop of lemon mint (which was more like sorbet) and it was delicious. After we were done everyone began departing and Ines said she’d send some photos she took along with recommendations. I sat there and took my time eating my ice cream.
I was hoping I’d be able to go to the hotel and drop off my food and then walk to the theater down the street but I wouldn’t have time I would have to go straight there. By now the sun was out and it looked like the rain finally passed for good. I was able to make it to the theater using public transportation 10 minutes before it was to begin just to find out I was at the wrong theater (Cinema Paris). I explained to the girl there how that location on Google Maps led me to the link where I got the ticket so how could it not be there. She explained how that theater was more of a “theatre”.
Upon looking at my ticket she showed me the address of where it actually was and it was too far (50 minutes via public transportation) so I took the loss (but did send an email requesting a refund). Well no movie today so I went to the grocery store to get more drinks and then walked back to the hotel. I figured I’ll watch a scary movie on Netflix (some scary movie because I fell asleep on it). Back in the room I treated my very tired feet/ankles and enjoyed just laying down for a bit. Now I’m wrapping up today’s adventure and am trying to decide if I want to pack up tonight or in the morning (I checkout tomorrow and after my tour head to the next city Hamburg).
I have an early memorial tour tomorrow and thankfully I can store my backpack at the hotel (I have a lock) until it’s over. Tomorrow will definitely test my endurance with the tour and the transfer of cities (Hamburg is a good 3 hours away via train). Keep me in your prayers and may I have another lovely sleep tonight.
