Georgetown, Guyana: More on the Lite Side

I actually slept pretty good last night (even fell asleep watching something on my iPad) and woke up around 9:00am. I lingered in bed until about 11am and then got up. We hadn’t really planned out what we were going to do last night because Kassandra fell asleep (and I find that funny because I was the one saying I might need a nap) yet I was up until about 1am before dozing off.

It seemed a bit cloudy out and I thought I heard rain at one point but once Kassandra was up we established we’d attempt the National Museum of Guyana again (we went yesterday and they were closed by the time we got there), go to a mall and go to the Ramada Princess Georgetown (they have a casino-Kassandra is interested in the casino but not me).

Now that we at least had a plan so I began getting ready. Somehow it still took us a few hours to get out of the house (Kassandra lol). After eating a lite breakfast at 3pm we looked for a ride via the ride app here Book A Ride and there were no drivers in our vicinity at the time and it would be a possible 30 minute wait. The museum closes at 4:30pm so with it then being about 3pm and possibly not getting a ride until 3:30pm and the ride being about 20 minutes to the museum we really would have to rush to see it and why rush we want to be able to take our time (after all we have a lot of time to kill while here).

Instead of going to the museum today we concluded we’d save it for another day and that we should just get a ride to the Amazonia Mall. Because it was taking so long we asked our host to order a taxi for us and he did. That taxi man got there in about 7-10 minutes and took us to the mall. The mall is what you’d expect to see in Guyana not big but enough to see (Kassandra was too ecstatic to see a Starbucks). We scoured the entire mall and actually bought something from their Home Store, packs of incense (each were only about $2.50 with a 20 inside) so when I say we racked up, we each got about 6 packs of scents we don’t usually find in the U.S. and others that just smelled good to us.

There were some good food options at the mall and even a nail salon which we also wanted to do earlier today but the places we were looking at were booked or not in the vicinity. We opted to check out the Ramada Georgetown/Princess Casino that was right around the corner. We entered the casino (we weren’t given any cards) and didn’t stay. I had no intent on playing anything and just planned on waiting while Kassandra played but she opted not to so we walked right on out and to the hotel restaurant Royal Restaurant next door.

We sat outside by the pool and ordered our meals. It took awhile but I got the cajun snapper filet with rice and vegetables and though the service was lacking a bit but the food was tasty (Kassandra enjoyed her chili trout dish). A guy named Benny over at the table next to us made a bit of small talk with us which eventually led to him joining our table. He comes to the area often and works as a flavor chemist I believe. He must also work with the restaurant staff on the menu often because he knew the names of the wait staff there and even requested a slice of cheesecake with 3 spoons for us to try and told them to put it on his tab.

They brought back a passion fruit chocolate chip cheesecake and we thanked him and took a spoonful. I grabbed a small spoonful because I don’t think passionfruit and I get along so I got just a baby piece. As soon as I put it in my mouth Benny mentioned that he tasted almond flavor and I stopped and scooped it right back off of my tongue before I could swallow it (y’all, I’m allergic to nuts, all types of nuts). It would only be a few minutes before I knew if I successfully was able to completely avoid me getting any type of reaction.

Benny called the waitress over and asked her what was in it and as she said an almond flavoring with coconut milk he explained the severity of the situation of what just happened and the girl looked at me worried and asked if I was going to be ok and I told her I was fine so far so we’ll see. He then had her get the manager to come over so he could convey that to him thar these things need to be mentioned and noted because it is a severe allergy. Needless to say no more cheesecake for me. I did ask Benny which El Dorado rum to try and he said the 12 Year. I also asked what the best souvenirs are to bring back and he said things that are handmade. He told us about an event called GuyExpo which has been going on a few days with tomorrow being the last day. He said it’s like a big flea market with different businesses and vendors and with tomorrow being the last day that’d be a great place to go to to get deals (and to definitely negotiate as vendors will be trying to sell what they can and get rid of things).

Tomorrow we have a 5 Island Tour and our meeting time is 6:15am. It’s a 12 hour event with lunch and a resort stop included. We decided we’d go to the expo after our long day tomorrow since tomorrow is the last day for it. Benny bid us farewell and it wasn’t long before we left too. At the entrance of the hotel is Book A Ride staff so we had them order a ride for us and thankfully they’re all right outside (a few vehicles) waiting to take you where you need to go (very convenient). When we arrived back at the Airbnb we coordinated for them to pick us up tomorrow at 5:30am to take us to our meeting spot for the tour. Tonight is the latest we’ve gotten in (10pm) but this afternoon was also the latest in which we’ve left out. While Kassandra watches the fight on TV I’m going to wrap up this post and go to bed because we have to get up early tomorrow and it will be a long day…
