Travel Day and Georgetown, Guyana: Welcome to Guyana

Alright, let’s pick up where I left off…if you followed my Umbria, Italy adventure you’d know the last point I was at was at JFK with my mom. At 4:45am I decided to depart JFK to head to Penn Station to catch my Amtrak train to Philadelphia at 7:17am and my mom went through TSA to catch her flight back to Raleigh at 7am. Of course getting to Penn Station was a breeze and I scouted Moynihan Train Hall for food because we really didn’t eat the day before and I got a bagel breakfast sandwich and an Arnold Palmer.

I ate my sandwich while I waited and when the time came boarded the train. I was so sleep deprived that I couldn’t help but fall asleep on the train even though I didn’t want to because I was afraid that I would miss my stop. Thankfully I didn’t and managed to stay awake and get off when I needed to. The best option of getting to the airport was to just take the local regional train (Septa) which was nearby. Within a few minutes and after a few stops you arrive right at PHL (Philadelphia’s airport).

I had already checked in but I wanted to check my personal item bag in United’s sizer seeing as though I had issues with Norse. Good thing I checked because it looked as though the sizer was a bit smaller than my personal item. I asked a nearby agent and explained the dynamic of my bag. She said given that the wheels come off she would let it through but she said because it looks like a suitcase I might have issues since I have no carry on bags for my ticket. She advised that upon boarding to have the wheels off but said it really depends on the gate agent.

I got through security with no issues although TSA pulled my bag to the side thinking my souvenir truffle honey were candles. I made my way to the gate and contacted my friend Kassandra to check her status (she was there at a Dunkin Donuts somewhere). She met me at the gate and we did a bit of catching up before I ran to get food to take on the plane with me. I said earlier that I had a taste for a cheesecake so I found a Gino’s and got a cheesesteak, fries and root beer.

By the time I got back to the gate we were boarding and although I went back and forth a little bit with the gate agent about my bag (I had thr wheels off) he just told me to go ahead but that I might have issues in Houston when it comes to boarding. The plane was small but even still I was able to get my bag under the seat. The flight to Houston was uncomfortable for me seeing as though I did have the bag in front of me under the seat I had no leg room. After awhile into the flight my right knee began cramping so I constantly found myself shifting around and got what little sleep I could.

At Houston of course our gate for the Georgetown flight was in another terminal so we made our way there (Kassandra stopping for food along the way). By the time we got to the gate the flight had already began boarding and there wasn’t a line of people which made me hopeful that the flight wasn’t full. The gate agent checked our passport and ticket and let us on with no issues (he didn’t even ask about my bag). Thank God when we got on the plane guess what we saw…a lot of empty seats. I had moved my ticket to a row by myself when I checked in but looking around I could get closer up.

I asked the flight attendant onboard if it was ok to move my seat after we depart and he asked where we were sitting. He said that wouldn’t be a problem but it would have to be rows behind 21 which was fine. He then decided he’d just go ahead and place us so he looked at the manifest and gave us each our own row back to back and we thanked him. We were able to stow our bags with no issues and we both grabbed the window seat on our rows (I’m more of an aisle girl but if I have the whole row I’ll do window).

We were given blankets and headphones and as I settled in I began looking at movie options. It didn’t take long before the movie was watching me. I woke up to drink and food service with the food being a nice cheesy pasta with a little tomato sauce. I watched a bit of Psycho and Goosebumps onboard. We arrived on time and passport control though the line was long didn’t take that much time. Customs we cleared through and met our driver Roberto outside.

We realized before we left we needed to get money so we asked if he could take us to a nearby ATM which he did after he changed the flat tire he had. At the old airport (which I’m not going to lie looked a little sketchy but had a security girl out front) we got some Guyanese money. On the way to the Airbnb we stopped by the Guyana sign we passed in a circle and took photos (mind you it’s like 1am by now here). Afterwards we stopped at a gas station to get water/drinks and then headed to the Airbnb.

Once there we settled in and looked around. We chatted for a while and at about 4am I showered and got ready for bed. It didn’t take long to go to sleep and I slept until 11:50am this morning (although at some point I woke up and put the blanket over me because I was cold). When I woke up I looked out the window and saw what looked like a rat/squirrel outside rummaging around. I then checked emails, confirmed a shift for work for when I get back and did my quick Instagram post for Italy. Today was our supermarket day and figure things out day (honestly there isn’t much to do here at least not in Georgetown specifically).

Once we got up we chatted and scheduled a tour for Saturday and that’s when Kassandra realized she had lost her atm card. Afterwhile, we ordered a ride to a restaurant and walked down the block to catch it and to our surprise there were 3 cows just roaming the street freely. Some of them were in people’s yard and as we got in the car one led the way and others followed. We found that the restaurant didn’t exist (it was someone’s house and you had to pick-up/deliver). Instead we asked our driver to take us to the supermarket instead which was around the corner. There was a Chinese restaurant “Dragon Garden restaurant” just a few houses over so we went there first but my God we had to cross over a small wooden bridge with muddy water, concrete blocks and metal underneath to get there (see photo). I went across but Kassandra was hesitant and with the help of a man was able to make it over. We ordered our food, went back across the wooden blocks and placed it in our ride (who we asked to stay and wait to take us back).

At the supermarket we got the things that we needed and headed home. We packed everything away and ate our food (mine was tasty-I got ginger chicken with onions and scallions and the portion was a nice one). We had some questions for our host Brian and he said he’d stop by which he did (we got a chance to see his 2 daughters as they went inside upstairs-they live upstairs and rent out where we are downstairs). He brought some cleaning supplies, showed us where the laundry was, fixed the stove and answered the city tour question which we ruled out. For the rest of the evening we worked to plan out the day tomorrow and chatted about random things. We tried the local beer here called Banks and it was alright (it was milder than I imagined). I think we have a good idea of what we’re going to do so I’m going to wrap up the night and this post.

What is this? Is it a squirrel? A rat? I’ve been trying to find out.
Cows right outside the house down the block.
